Preserve Peeks: Your Opportunity to Visit Unopened Properties

Kent Bog Expansion Preserve

The Park District has been offering Preserve Peeks since 2019 to give the public an opportunity to explore and learn about the preserve properties. Registration is required, as parking is limited.

What is a Portage Park District Preserve?
Preserves are properties that are not currently open to the public. Preserves are occasionally used for guided hikes and specially permitted research. These properties are unopened due to a variety of reasons including location and access, funding resources, restoration planning, and more. Many of these properties are planned to be opened as future parks.

What happens at a Preserve Peek?
Attendees at Preserve Peeks will participate in a guided hike with park staff, learn about the history of the property, and explore the natural resources on the property. Participants are encouraged to ask questions and offer feedback about the future plans for the preserve. Since these are unopened properties with undeveloped trails, participants should wear sturdy shoes or boots and expect uneven terrain during the guided hike. There are no bathroom facilities at park preserves.

Registration is required and is limited, so visit our Things to Do page to register for the next Preserve Peek!
