Just 100 years ago, we were on the verge of losing dozens of North American bird species which are now common today including snowy egrets, great blue herons, and Eastern bluebirds. It was already far too late for some species like the passenger pigeon and Carolina parakeet. Market hunting for meat as well as for birds’ plumes were the leading causes for decline. The beginning of the proverb, “It Takes a Village,” rings true; when a collection of like-minded people work together for a common cause, they can change the world. Conservationists boldly took a stand and literally saved the lives of billions of birds. Thanks to these efforts, we don’t have to live on this little blue dot without the company of feathered fauna, but consider this: where would we be without them? Join Jamey Emmert from the Ohio Division of Wildlife to be enlightened on the importance of birds here in the Buckeye State as well as our global dependence on these essential creatures.
