The Office of the Portage County Public Defender is a county office created by statute to provide legal representation to indigent adults and juveniles who are charged with the commission of an offense for an act that is a violation of a state statute or local ordinance for which the penalty or any possible adjudication includes the potential loss of liberty.
The Public Defender's Office is one of the few county offices whose budget is subsidized with state and municipal monies.
The Public Defender's Office is managed by a Public Defender/Director who is appointed to a four year term by the County Public Defender Commission, and who is supported by a staff of seven attorneys, an investigator, an office manager and a legal assistant/secretary.
In 2014, the Public Defender's Office provided representation at the felony, misdemeanor, juvenile and appellate level in approximately 3,000 cases.
