RAVENNA, OHIO – Effective Wednesday, March 18, 2020, Portage County Job and Family Services (PCJFS) is activating our Continuity of Operations Plan as a result of the current COVID-19 crisis in an effort to take proactive measures against the potential spread of the virus to our clients, employees and the broader community. As a Job and Family Services agency we are committed to providing essential services to the Portage County residents. Those essential services include Food Assistance aka SNAP, cash assistance, child care subsidy, Medicaid, Prevention, Retention and Contingency (PRC) emergency assistance, Child Support financial assistance to children and modifications of orders for obligors, Child and Adult Protective Services, youth case management, Non-Emergency Transportation (NET) to medical appointments and residential services to children in PCJFS custody.


We will be expedient in processing public assistance applications so that individuals can receive those benefits to which they are entitled. We will continue to investigate child and elder abuse and neglect cases and those calls should continue to be made the 330-296-2273 (CARE). We will continue to address the safety and wellbeing of the children entrusted in our care. We will not be taking negative action on public assistance and child support cases at this time. Work Experience Participants (WEP) will not be sanctioned from benefits for non-participation at worksites.
JFS is currently updating our PRC Plan to include an option for families that have lost employment and who are not eligible for unemployment, to apply for PRC and receive a onetime cash assistance payment. Information on how to apply will be available on our website by Thursday, March 19, 2020 and we will begin to receive applications on Friday, March 20, 2020.


Effective Wednesday, March 18, 2020, PCJFS Child Support Office, Ohio Means JOBS Office and our Children Services Office locations will be closed to the public. JFS will be reducing our onsite workforce. However, those not onsite will be off site performing duties as they are coordinated. All County JFS agencies are receiving support from Ohio Department of Job and Family Services to allow this process to happen.


Many of the services available to JFS clients can be accessed via telephone by contacting our main number which is 330-297-3750 and we will continue to encourage clients to access this number in lieu of coming into the agency. For those that do not want to wait on hold and need to follow up or get information on securing one of the essential services can also email JFS at Portage_PA@JFS.ohio.gov. Individuals that have in-person emergencies or need to make a cash child support payment should report to the Public Assistance Division- 2nd floor at 449S. Meridian St., Ravenna, Ohio 44266.
