Our Veterans

This project pays tribute to both our past and our future. Placement of the Portage County Veterans' Memorial Plaza on the front lawn area of the County Courthouse provides an area that encourages the thoughtful remembrance of all Portage County Veterans. The plaza site is also ADA accessible.

There are approximately 14,000 veterans in Portage County. Most cities, villages and townships in Portage County pay tribute to veterans with private gravesite memorials and local memorials. This is the first countywide memorial that honors all veterans from all branches of the armed forces at one site.

Project Status as of October, 2011:

Memorial bricks and pavers installed:

  • Level I (8x8) = 580

  • Level II (12x12)= 207

  • Level III (12x12 Granite) = 40

  • Benches = 6

On behalf of our county, we dedicated these bricks and honor the sacrifices and service of Portage County Veterans.

The Portage County Veterans' memorial is made possible through $72,000 U.S. Housing and Urban Development funds secured by Timothy Ryan, 17th Congressional District Representative, sponsorship by the Portage County Board of Commissioners, the tax payers,  and through many generous donations.
