  Curbside Recycling Collection Programs

2007 HOLIDAYS:
  • Curbside collection day is delayed by one day if your recycle day is ON or AFTER these holidays:

New Year's (January 1), Memorial Day (May 28), Independence Day (July 4), Labor Day (September 3), Thanksgiving (November 22), and Christmas (December 25)

The District currently provides either weekly or biweekly curbside or "house to house" recycling collection to over two-thirds of the households in Portage County.  These areas include:
  • Aurora City
  • Mantua Township and Village
  • Hiram Township and Village
  • Streetsboro City
  • Shalersville Township
  • Ravenna Kent City
  • Franklin Township
  • Brady Lake Village
  • Brimfield Township
  • Atwater Township

Two or more recycling bins are provided to each household to store their recyclables. Residents interested in starting service should contact the District at 330-678-8808. We can tell you the collection day, cost, and provide the bins to get you started right away. Current participants should remember to have their bins at the street by 6:00 am on collection day. Don't be worried if you still see some full bins on your street because our trucks collect from one side at a time for safety reasons. If your bins haven't been emptied by 3:00 pm, please call us.

  FAQ'S The 3 R's~"Reduce - Reuse - Recycle"

Answers to your frequently asked questions about the 3 R's:

Q: Where do items for recycling go after the hauler has collected them?
A: Recyclables collected in Portage County are delivered to the District Recycling Center in Brimfield where they are sorted and marketed to end users. Over 95% of the recyclables delivered to our facility are sorted, recycled and resold to be made into new products. Newspaper is remanufactured into a variety of materials such as insulation, paper tubes and packaging. #1 - PETE Plastic is used for polyester clothing, carpeting and roofing materials. #2 - HDPE is used to make irrigation pipe and drainage tiles. Glass is used to make new containers and fiberglass. Aluminum cans are used to make new cans. Steel is used to make new steel products.

Q: What are the most common misconceptions about recycling?
A: That recycling should be free. Many people believe that they should not be charged for recycling services because it is "the right thing to do" or because we are making a significant amount of money from selling recyclables. Although people are making the right choice when they recycle, their recyclables still need to be collected by special vehicles, processed at facilities that cost millions of dollars to build and transported to markets that are as far away as Asia. All of this requires equipment and labor, which translates into cost. Some recyclables, such as aluminum, have a high enough market value to generate enough revenue to cover the cost of collection, processing and marketing. Other recyclables, such as paper and glass, are of such little value that they may actually cost the waste hauler more to collect, process and transport than they receive from selling the materials. When this occurs, we need to pass these costs on to their customers. The way to increase the market value for recyclables is to purchase products made of recycled-content materials.

That if a package says "recyclable" or if it has the "chasing arrows" it is recyclable in your community. Not all materials that are "recyclable" are able to be recycled within Portage County. For example, there are several bottles that are marked with the recycling symbol but are actually #3 through #7 plastics that cannot be resold in this area. It is extremely important to attempt to purchase products made from paper, steel, aluminum, glass or #1 or #2 plastics that can be recycled in our area.

That "recyclable" and "recycled-content" mean the same thing. "Recyclable" means that the material has the potential to be recycled, but is only recycled after it is collected, processed, marketed and remanufactured into a new product. "Recycled-content" means the product is made out of recyclables that were remanufactured into new products. Thus, unless we are buying recycled-content materials, we are not truly recycling.

Q: What three, simple things could any consumer do to reduce the amount of waste put into landfills?
A: Buy recycled-content materials. The only way to assure that recycling programs continue is if there is a market for recyclables. Consumers control the market place for recyclables through their purchasing practices. Thus, when shopping, be sure to read the labels to see if the product is either made out of or packaged in recycled-content materials.

Participate. Every community in Portage County has either drop-off or curbside recycling available to their residents. Recycling prolongs the life of our area landfills.

"Use Less Stuff." Everybody has extremely busy schedules and convenience items are an essential part of our lives. However, some of these convenient items have a significant amount of excess packaging which is neither recycled-content or is recyclable. When purchasing convenience items, try to select the item which has the least amount of packaging and is packaged in either recycled-content or recyclable materials.

Q: How can I reduce the amount of junk mail I receive?
A: You can reduce waste by having your name removed from many bulk mailing lists. Write to:
Mail Preference Service
Direct Marketing Association
P.O. Box 9008
Farmingdale, New York 11735-9008

Q: Where can I properly dispose of my appliances, tires, hazardous wastes and other materials?
A: The District Recycling Center offers some special drop off recycling opportunities for Portage County residents. Appliances with freon, oil and other household hazardous wastes can be dropped off at the District Recycling Center between 7:30 am and 4:00 pm Monday through Friday. The District Recycling Center also accepts confidential documents for shredding by appointment only. Call for details on the shredding specifications and availability.
