Avian Influenza Frequently Asked Questions

What is Avian Influenza?

Avian Influenza is a virus that usually affects birds but can infect and cause serious disease among poultry, such as chickens. It is very contagious among birds and can be deadly.

How is Avian Influenza transmitted?

There have been no reported human cases in the United States and Canada. Most cases of avian influenza infection in humans have been reported in Asia and are from having direct contact (living in same household as in 3rd world countries) of infected poultry or contaminated surfaces.

Which countries are experiencing outbreaks?

Poultry outbreaks have occurred in Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Lao, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam. Possible human outbreaks occurred in Vietnam, Thailand, and Cambodia.

Travel Health Precautions

On January 26, 2005, CDC issued a Travel Health Precaution notice about the avian influenza on the CDC Travelers’ website.

Is it going to be in the United States next year?

We cannot predict next year that the avian influenza will be in the United States, but the CDC is actively monitoring the current activity in Asia.

Is there a vaccine available?

Vietnam is currently testing the vaccine on humans. The United States government is getting ready to test the avian influenza vaccine.

What is a Pandemic?

An influenza pandemic is a global outbreak that occurs when a new influenza virus emerges among people, spreads, and causes disease worldwide. CDC and WHO are actively monitoring influenza world wide, including Asia, of the potential emergence of pandemic strains of influenza.

How can you prevent the spread of flu?

Clean your hands often, using either soap and water or waterless alcohol-based hand rubs, which removes potentially infectious materials from your skin and helps prevent disease transmission. Cover your cough and discard exposed tissue. Do not go to work sick
