Portage County Emergency
Management Agency (EMA), was established by the Portage County
Commissioners in 1989 under Ohio Revised Code 5915.071.
Previously EMA was known as Civil Defense in the 1950's and
Disaster Services in the 1970's. In 1995 EMA became associated
with the Ohio Department of Public Safety.
- EMA is tasked with
planning, training and assisting with the coordination of
disasters in Portage County.
- EMA stands ready to assist
local jurisdictions manage a disaster, both natural (tornado,
flood, blizzard) and technological (HAZMAT or nuclear).
- EMA is the agency which
coordinates damage assessment and is the access point for
aid in a disaster from the State of Ohio and the Federal
Government.
- EMA is the point of
contact for changes in the database for the County-wide
enhanced 911 system.
- EMA is the designated
agency for assisting in the funding and equipment for the
Portage County Hazardous Materials Response Team (HAZAMAT)
